Search Engine Optimisation
There is no one single element involved in SEO, and there are no published rules from the search engines as to how to achieve good rankings, only guidelines.
By far the most important element is your site text content. This is what your users read, and should be the main priority. Search engines can only read text in a page, they cannot read images, so ensure you have good text content in your smart looking site.
Search engines also read and follow internal links, if possible your site menu should consist of text links rather than images.
Relevant page titles, descriptions, heading tags and inbound links to your site are also very important to the search engines.

Ensuring your website code is standards compliant means that users with disabilities or impairments are much more likely to be able to use your site effectively. Your site is also more likely to display consistently in most current web browsers.
The importance of keywords
Most people miss the relevance of keywords when expecting their website to appear with good rankings in the search engines. You are competing against every other website worldwide which offers a similiar product or service to your website. Ask yourself the question, "Why should your website appear higher in the rankings than your competitors?"
If your website is selling perhaps used cars, then a search for "used car dealers" in the UK shows over 500,000 results - a hugely competitive marketplace.
Include an additional keyword and use "Ayrshire used car dealers", the competition drops to around 40,000 websites.
Choose your keywords carefully and ensure your website is optimised for those keyword phrases.
